To host some of the most anticipated events in the world, world-class stadiums require expertise in the design and use of the best and tested products. With more than five decades of experience, Birdair, through its subsidiary, Taiyo Middle East, was selected to provide the design, fabrication, supply and installation of the membrane roofing system for the renovation of the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar, which has been selected as the venue. 2022 FIFA World Cup. Together with Projects as project manager and Dar Al-Handasah as a design consultant, the renovated stadium will have a unique and modern design and aesthetic, containing a combination of three main product lines for roof systems: PTFE fiberglass membrane, single ETFE film, and Tensotherm™, a translucent insulated membrane tension system. Birdair provides the design, fabrication, and supply of the three types of membranes above. Most roof systems will feature approximately 46,451 square meters of PTFE fiberglass membrane. Approximately 3,252 square meters of the south edge of the roof will use a single-layer ETFE film supported by a cable net. Finally, another section located on the lower edge near the compression ring incorporates the Tensotherm system to provide thermal performance. The installation of the three membrane systems was carried out by Birdair's subsidiary, Taiyo Middle East, which is located in Dubai. TMI is the closest partner in Indonesia, to realize the design, fabrication, supply, and installation of wide-span tension membrane roofs for stadiums in Indonesia. The need for security and comfort control at the gate of the 'cluster' includes rainwater drainage when 'tap' a magnetic card, rainwater protection for security guards when checking vehicles, and adequate lighting during the day and night. With funding from Developer Premiere, the community representatives held a joint deliberation to determine what facilities were needed for the two 'checkpoints' to enter the 'cluster'. From a long discussion, it was agreed that the basic shape of the Garuda bird symbolizes togetherness and peaceful coexistence. Thus, every citizen is always reminded of the commitments that have been achieved together when passing through and witnessing the Garuda gate. Even if it's just a gate. The second thing that is no less important is the 7m canopy span. The wind load distributed to the membrane frame structure must be fully accommodated. Moreover, the existing wind speed is above the current average of the Loading Regulations in Indonesia. The uniqueness of this project lies in reaching an agreement on the design of 300 families, after deliberation for up to 3 months. TMI is able to facilitate the design process to design implementation to meet the needs of Premiere residents with various socio-cultural and educational backgrounds. Read MoreEvents on the open-air stage in Lavis, a village in Trentino Italy, have a long tradition that forms part of the people's cultural identity. The stage's dependence on wind and weather has traditionally led to the postponement or cancellation of plays and concerts. To ensure a safe event not only for community members but also for many summer visitors, the community decided to cover the stage with a light, see-through and partially convertible roof. Taking these requirements into account, architect Kugel and the engineering office of Rein, Stuttgart, developed a combination of permanent and retractable roofs with a total area of approximately 800 m². A permanent roof covers and protects the stage area. A retractable roof which can be opened by means of a supporting structure with traction cables, protecting spectators against wind and rain. The light weight of the PVC/PES membrane elements, details of which were co-developed with Temme/Obermeier, allows visitors to experience the open air, whether the roof is closed or open. The two roof areas are connected by a central main steel beam with polycarbonate elements that protect the roof from being exposed during winter. With the help of a manual crane and with the power of 3 - 4 people, this large 500 m² membrane area can be brought to a parking position or stretched out on a chair in minutes. Read MoreThe city of Halle, known as the city of salt mines, with a population of 239,000, is located on the banks of the Salle river. It is the largest city in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Halle's central bus station is an important entrance to the city, located close to the main train station and has been completely redesigned. Nine barrier-roofed bus stops with PVC/PES membrane roofing were built. The elliptically designed lightweight roof created by Temme - Obermeier is the 'eye-catcher' of the square. The station connects individual waiting areas together to form a harmonious whole and thus makes use of the principle of designing an ensemble: Forming a whole while maintaining the individual forms of certain parts. The membrane design underscores the innovative character of the station, also known as the "Space Center". Please click READ MORE for the full article.
